Scope and Contents
The J. Lyndon Shanley Papers are organized in three categories: personal files, appointment calendars, and curricular material for the two classes Shanley taught.
His personal files include biographical records, correspondence, news releases, articles and addresses, an unpublished autobiography and poems. Also included are reviews of his books. One folder contains two papers written by his daughter, Mary Lyndon. Shanley's appointment and meetings calendars cover the years 1959 to 1978.
The curricular material includes syllabi, bibliographies, and reading lists for the two courses Shanley taught at Northwestern, as well as notes he prepared for them. The material for English C-05, Elements of Poetry, and includes syllabi and bibliographies (1948-1975), arranged chronologically by date. Also included are his many notes arranged by subjects, each in a separate folder. The material for the English C-32 Chaucer class and is arranged similarly. Included are: syllabi, requested reading lists, and class lists (1964-1978), arranged chronologically by date. Also included are Shanley's notes for the class, arranged by subject. One folder contains a few items from the Navy V-12 program.

There are no restrictions on use of the materials in the department for research; all patrons must comply with federal copyright regulations. This collection is stored off-site and requires two business days advance notice for retrieval. Abstract
J. Lyndon Shanley joined the faculty at Northwestern University as an instructor in the English Department. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1940, associate professor in 1946, and professor in 1951. Shanley retired from the University in 1978. His research focused on Chaucer, Spencer and Thoreau. The J. Lyndon Shanley Papers are organized into three categories: personal files, appointment calendars, and curricular material for the two classes Shanley taught at Northwestern, English C-05, Elements of Poetry, and English C-32 Chaucer. One folder contains a few items from the Navy V-12 program. (Shanley Pavilion, originally classrooms for the V-12 Program, was named for him.)
Arrangement
The J. Lyndon Shanley Papers are organized into: personal files; appointment calendars (arranged by date); English C-05, Elements of Poetry; English C-32 Chaucer. Materials for both courses include a sequence of alphabetically-arranged notes. One folder in the C-32 group contains a few items from the Navy V-12 program.
Method of Acquisition
The J. Lyndon Shanley Papers were donated to the University Archives by Professor Shanley on June 22, 1982, July 8, 1983, and August 27, 1991 as Accessions 82-80, 83-111, and 91-151, respectively.
Separated Materials
One half cubic foot of duplicates and .2 cubic foot of extraneous material were discarded.
