Russell A. Fisher (1904-2000) Papers
Scope and Contents
The Russell A. Fisher Papers fill seven boxes and span the period 1928-1988. The Papers are organized in six categories: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, teaching files, research files, and publications. Three folders of administrative files from the physics department are also included.
The biographical materials include curricula vitae and annual supplements, and small amounts of clippings, financial records, and news releases.
The education files include lecture notes from courses in Fisher's master's and doctoral programs and a bound carbon-copy of his doctoral dissertation, “Hyperfine Structure in Ionized Bismuth.”
The correspondence deals mainly with research, recommendations, and speaking engagements.
The teaching files contain lecture notes, problems, examination sheets, grade sheets, and some outlines.
The research files consist primarily of notes.
The publications include reprints and a few drafts of articles and entries for encyclopedias.

Abstract
Fisher was a professor of physics at Northwestern University. His research interests included atomic structure and atomic spectroscopy (especially hyperfine structure and nuclear magnetic moments), physical optics, and nuclear structure and nuclear spectroscopy (“Low energy”).The Russell A. Fisher Papers fill seven boxes and span the period 1928-1988. The Papers are organized in six categories: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, teaching files, research files, and publications. Three folders of administrative files from the physics department are also included.

The Russell A. Fisher Papers are organized in six categories: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, teaching files, research files, and publications. Three folders of administrative files from the physics department are also included.
The biographical material is arranged according to document type. The education files are divided between Fisher's work on his Master's and his doctoral degrees. The correspondence is arranged chronologically. The teaching files are primarily arranged by course. The research files are arranged by topic, with a few undated notes grouped together. The publications are arranged by title, with reprints grouped together.
Method of Acquisition
The Russell A. Fisher Papers were donated to the University Archives by W.J. Fisher on May 1, 1990 (Accession #90-42).
Separated Materials
Approximately two linear inches of material were transferred to the Archives' general reference files. Approximately three linear inches of duplicate materials and five inches of extraneous materials were discarded.
