Scope and Contents

The Marjorie May Cowan papers are contained in one half-size box and date from 1929-1934, 1949, and 1984. The bulk of the papers consists of Cowan's diaries. During the years 1932 through 1934 she kept detailed accounts of her social and academic activities and interests. Among the entries are characterizations of family friends, and descriptions of several Northwestern faculty and the courses they taught. Faculty members noted include Snyder, Herrold, and Baker Brownell. The series includes a few letters, and a folder of some of Cowan's course papers, along with her review of F.B. Snyder's Life of Robert Burns.

Abstract

Marjorie May Cowan obtained a B.S. degree in Liberal Arts from Northwestern University in 1933. A member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, she was active in campus activities and social affairs. Her papers are contained in one half-size box and date from 1929-1934, 1949, and 1984. The bulk of the papers consists of Cowan's diaries. During the years 1932 through 1934 she kept detailed accounts of her social and academic activities and interests.

Method of Acquisition

Marjorie Cowan Geisler donated these papers to the University Archives on March 12, 1979, and August 30, 1984 (Accession Nos. 79-38 and 84-140).

Separated Materials

A few items relating to the University Circus and the Northwestern class of 1933 have been removed to the Archives' general reference files. One folder of class notes and related materials of Cowan's brother, Robert (Northwestern University, class of 1940), have been separated to the Archives' biographical files under the heading: Cowan, Robert W.
