This collection contains Frederick S. Siebert's collection of materials on the two freedom of the press cases decided by the United States Supreme Court: Near versus Minnesota (June 1, 1931) and Associated Press versus U.S. (June 18, 1945). In the latter case, Siebert consulted with Howard Ellis, a member of the law firm Kirkland, Fleming, Green, Martin and Ellis.

Box 1 contains correspondence with Robert R. McCormick (1932-1935) and Howard Ellis (1942-1946) as well as miscellaneous correspondence (1943-1946), articles on the Associated Press anti-monopoly case and Siebert's study of it. Box 2 includes documents related to the Associated Press case, including the District Court of New York decision and the U.S. Supreme Court decision, and court views on the function of the press. Box 3 contains the printed proceedings of the court and published pamphlets with responses on the case and appeals. Box 4 contains a file of press clippings and pamphlets of printed proceedings of the court in Near vs. Minnesota.
