Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 25 autograph letters, 18 of which are signed “Yr lovg old ma” to her daughter Stella Duckworth (1869-1897) with all but one addressed “Beloved female.” The remaining letters are to or from other family members and friends, including Gerald Duckworth, Maria Jackson (Julia Stephen’s mother), and one undated letter from Stella Duckworth to her mother.

Abstract

Julia Prinsep Stephen (née Jackson, formerly Mrs. Duckworth) (1846-1895) was an artist’s model, society beauty, and philanthropist; former wife of Herbert Duckworth, and later wife of Sir Leslie Stephen; mother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. This collection consists primarily of autograph letters from Stephen to her daughter, Stella Duckworth, with a number of related familiy correspondence.
