Scope and Contents

The Free Speech Movement Collection is arranged in three categories of materials in a total of 40 folders: (1) Serials; (2) Records, Tapes, and Photographs; and (3) Reports, Letters, Bulletins etc.

Serials can be found in folders 1 through 4. Folder 5 contains records and photographs; tapes are numbered and are located to the right of folders in Box #1. The other materials are found in folders 6 through 40. Each folder in this category has a title which corresponds to a specific subject connected with the Free Speech Movement.

Those not acquainted with the history of the Free Speech Movement may wish to read one of the chronologies contained in folder #17, as an aid in determining the folder in which more specific information may be found.

Abstract

The Free Speech Movement (FSM) of Berkeley, California was a series of large and student-led protests on the University of California Berkeley campus during late 1964 and early 1965. At issue were the students’ rights to engage in on-campus political activities, and for the University to recognize more general rights to free speech and academic freedom. The collection is arranged in three categories in a total of 40 folders: (1) Serials; (2) Records, Tapes, and Photographs; and (3) Reports, Letters, Bulletins etc.

The Free Speech Movement collection is organized into: serials (arranged alphabetically by title); records, tapes, and photographs; and reports, letters, bulletins etc. (in alphabetical order).
