The first International Drama Conference was held September 2 - 7, 1963, as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The Drama Conference was organized by John Calder who collected this material. Writers from twenty-three countries were invited to participate to discuss contemporary theater and such issues as trends in drama, subsidy, censorship, nationalism, and the future of the theater. Kenneth Tynan was conference chairman. Participants whose correspondence is in this collection include Edward Albee, Hilton Edwards, Martin Esslin, John Gielgud, Graham Greene, Sir Lawrence Olivier, John Osborne, Harold Pinter, Erwin Piscator, Kenneth Tynan, and Franco Zeffirelli. Some letters include answers to a questionnaire or the typescript of an essay to be presented at the conference.
