This collection contains Silas Strawn's letters, memoranda, speeches, special reports on China, the four-part Report of the Extraterritoriality Commission, and Mr. Strawn's own report as chairman. The correspondence between 1924 and 1927 is all related to U.S.-China relations and includes letters and memos from Strawn; Frank B. Kellogg, Secretary of State; John Van A. MacMurray, Minister to China; Stanley K. Hornbeck; Rodney Gilbert; Judge Charles Evans Hughes, and others.

Biographical / Historical
Silas H. Strawn and John Van A. MacMurray, Minister of the U.S. to China, were appointed by President Calvin Coolidge as delegates to the Special Conference on American Relations with China held in Peking on October 26, 1925, as provided for in the 1922 treaty relating to the Chinese Customs Tariff. Strawn also served as chairman for the Chinese Extraterritoriality Commission. The following collection includes Mr. Strawn's letters, memoranda, speeches, special reports on China, the four-part Report of the Extraterritoriality Commission, and Mr. Strawn's own report as chairman. The correspondence between 1924 and 1927 is all related to U.S.-China relations and includes letters and memos from Strawn; Frank B. Kellogg, Secretary of State; John Van A. MacMurray, Minister to China; Stanley K. Hornbeck; Rodney Gilbert; Judge Charles Evans Hughes, and others.
Silas H. Strawn, who was prominent in local business and civic affairs, served as a trustee of Northwestern University from 1930 until his death in 1946 at the age of 79. Mrs. Strawn donated these papers to the Library in 1949.
