Abstract

This collection consists of the by-line clippings of selected Chicago Tribune writers, 1914-1981.

Arrangement

Arrangement completed prior to receiving collection from the McCormick Foundation.

Custodial History

These materials were originally assembled by the reference room (morgue) on the fourth floor of the Tribune Tower.

During the 1970s, because of several moves and a shortage of space, an undetermined number of these files were returned to the writers involved. Those of Harold Hutchings were already in an archives file cabinet and were incorporated into this collection; an attempt was made at the time to retrieve others from the authors.

In the spring of 1984, during remodeling, the reference room was asked to vacate its storage space on the fifth floor of the Tribune Tower. Barbara Newcombe, librarian, agreed to turn over to the Tribune Company Archives the by-line files of writers no longer active with the Chicago Tribune.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.
