Boxes 1-5 include files and correspondence related to R.R. McCormick's activities as director and meetings of the Associated Press and American Newspaper Publishers Association, as well as general administration reports (1924-1955). Boxes 6-7 include materials on Tribune buildings and properties, subsidiaries and personnel (1926-1956). Boxes 8-14 include the files of the Advertising, Circulation, Legal, Promotion, and Editorial Departments (1926-1958). Files related to WGN are contained in boxes 15-21 (1926-1959), and the Mutual Broadcasting System in boxes 22-34 (1933-1955). Materials in the collection are related to the following Tribune departments: Advertising, Circulation, Legal, Editorial, and Production; as well as radio station WGN and the Mutual Broadcasting System.

Custodial History
These papers were selected for inclusion in the Tribune Company Archives from the business manager files of the Chicago Tribune. Materials related to routine office functions were not retained because they were considered to have limited historical value.
In selecting papers, an attempt was made to preserve material from each department and subsidiary of the company--material which covered more than a brief period of time; as well as material that could fill gaps in the Archives collections. For example, the records of WGN and the Mutual Broadcasting System were weeded but kept largely intact because they represented the first major acquisition of material relating to Tribune Company's broadcast operations.
However, the voluminous papers of routine character relating to the Tribune's Canadian operations were not kept because archival holdings in this area were already extensive. An example of these holdings is the correspondence between Arthur A. Schmon and Col. Robert R. McCormick from 1922 to 1955 which documents at the decision-making level the programs and policies of the Ontario Paper Company, the Quebec North Shore Paper Company, and the Quebec and Ontario Transportation Company.
