Medill family correspondence
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters to and from various members of the Medill, Patterson and McCormick families, chiefly during the years 1850 to 1899. Included are letters exchanged by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Medill before and after their marriage, letters to and from their daughters and their families, a group of Civil War letters from Major William H. Medill to his brother Joseph written from 1861 until his death in May 1863, and an assortment of letters from various other relatives.

Abstract
Correspondence among members of the Medill, Patterson and McCormick families, chiefly involving Joseph Medill (managing editor of the Chicago Tribune) and his wife, Katherine Patrick Medill.
Arrangement
Arrangement completed prior to receiving the collection from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Because most of the letters are undated, it has been impossible to arrange all of them chronologically.
Custodial History
The Medill family correspondence is part of the material which Robert R. McCormick inherited at his Mother's death in 1932.
