Scope and Contents

This collection consists of papers of the Chicago Tribune's marketing department, largely while under its earlier name, the promotion and publicity department. The papers in this collection are chiefly those of William Jerome Byrnes (1955/1962) and Joseph A. Burns (1962/1972), but a few are those of Tomas P. O'Donnell (1972/1974). These managers are in correspondence with executives Harold F. Grumhaus, Frederick A. Nichols, and J. Howard Wood. The collection also includes speeches of Grumhaus and Wood, and some personal material on Wood

Biographical / Historical

In 1972 the newly created marketing department took over the functions of the promotion and publicity department which in the 1920s had grown out of the business survey department. At the time this finding aid was prepared, the marketing department consisted of the creative division, public relations, marketing services, and research services.

The following people have headed the department:

  • William Jerome Byrnes, manager of promotion and publicity department (1929/June 30, 1962)
  • Joseph A. Burns, manager (until 1967), then director of promotion and publicity department (July 1, 1962/December 31, 1972)
  • Thomas P. O'Donnell, marketing director (October 1972/December 31, 1974)
  • William J. Rowe, marketing director (Jan. 1, 1975/August 3, 1977)
  • David G. Ferm, marketing director (August 4, 1977/May 1, 1979)
  • Henry K. Wurzer, vice president of Chicago Tribune Co. for advertising and marketing (May 1, 1979/August 7, 1979)
  • D.M. Robertson, marketing director (May 1, 1979/February 27, 1980)
  • Thomas G. Clancy Vice President, Director of Sales/Marketing (August 7, 1979/February 27, 1980); Director of Marketing (February 27, 1980- )
