Abstract

Records of the law firm of Shepard, McCormick and Thomason, chiefly concerning the collection of debts

Arrangement

Arrangement completed prior to receiving the collection from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

Custodial History

At the time of processing for the Tribune Company Archives, the files had been stored, apparently for nearly 60 years, in a set of file cabinets which also included correspondence of Robert R. McCormick as president of the Chicago Sanitary District in the period 1906-1910. These files had been preserved in Tribune Tower, Chicago, as part of the Chicago Tribune's archives, but never examined, indexed or stored for easy future reference.

Debt collection cases initiated at the request of the Tribune were originally filed as a group. Cases initiated for other clients formed a second group. Each case bore an assigned number. All of these cases have been made a part of the Tribune Company Archives.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.

General

Robert R. McCormick was a founding member of the law form of Shepard, McCormick and Thomason, but the correspondence does not indicate that he handled debt collection cases. Dwight H. Green, then a lawyer in the firm, appears to have handled some of the cases.
