Chicago Tribune. Departmental papers. Employee relations

 Collection
Identifier: XI-125-10

Scope and Contents

Employee relations files, chiefly job applications and routine "tickets" for salary increases. Only a sampling of the available materials was brought to the Tribune Company Archives for preservation. The principal interest of these materials lies not in the individuals, but in company policies and procedures with respect to such things as salary determination, salary increases, severance pay, vacations, time cards, pensions and other retirement benefits.

Members of the employee relations staff involved in the correspondence include Robert Bosau (personnel and then employee relations manhager from 1975-05 to 1978-02); Ron Musil (personnel manager under Heraty); Larry Deever; and in the compensation division Linda Ceratto, Susan Gallagher, Sandy Lark, and Terry Hakala. Others involved include Robert M. Hunt (president of Chicago Tribune); Harold Lifvendahl (general manager); and L.A. van Vlissingen (former personnel manager and at this time in charge of personnel matters for the editorial department).

Processing Information

In the fall of 1987 it was learned that a hundred or more boxes and file drawers of old records were to be cleared out of the old handball court on the seventh floor of Tribune Tower. John McCutcheon and Arthur Means, in charge of Chicago Tribune records management, made a survey and decided that the Tribune Company Archives should salvage such materials as belonged there. The files were in some disarray, but an effort was made to retain the original groupings and folder titles
