Abstract

Col. Robert R. McCormick delivered a weekly radio address over WGN, and spoke frequently on other occasions. This series consists of collections of printed versions of his addresses (including some typescripts) that have been bound into volumes. His talks cover a wide range of topics, but primarily involve his views on the United States, relations with other countries (including World War II), the Army, and the newspaper business.

Arrangement

There are four separate sets of speeches, created by different entities for different reasons. Within each set of speeches, the texts are presented in chronological order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.

Related Materials

Northwestern University holds a comprehensive set of Col. McCormick's speeches. (Other series containing speeches are I-29, I-30, I-31, I-32, I-33, I-34, I-35, I-36, I-36.1, I-42, and I-55). A tab-delimited file merging information derived from all these series is available upon request.

Processing Information

A larger number of bound collections of Col. McCormick's speeches were contained within the Tribune Company Archives when they were transferred to Northwestern University. Each collection was compared in detail against other copies of the same material held in other series. The bound collections that were retained--those in this series--either contain information not present elsewhere in the Tribune Company Archives, or bear Col. McCormick's bookplate. If a collection consists of multiple volumes, all volumes were retained even if only one of the items in one of the volumes of the collection contains material unique to the archives.
