Scope and Contents

The Feminine Footprints Collection includes materials related to the creation and broadcast of Carolyn Armenta Davis’ radio series project, Feminine Footprints. The collection is arranged into two boxes and includes materials from 1973 to 2003.

Series 1: Research Materials, 1973-1978, 1994, 2000-2003, contains materials Davis created, compiled, and used for researching influential Black women. Included in this series are printed out email correspondence, printed out webpages that capture information about individuals, and a variety of magazine titles. Materials from this series helped to inform her 1978 radio series, Feminine Footprints, and lectures for the 25th anniversary of Feminine Footprints in 2003.

Series 2: Feminine Footprints Radio Program, 1976-1978, 1982, includes materials related to the radio program, Feminine Footprints, such as correspondence, agreements, and promotional materials related to Mutual Black Network. Series 2 also includes scripts, episode lists, press releases and publicity, newspaper clippings, and awards.

Series 3: Audiovisual Media, 1978, consists of three magnetic reel-to-reel tapes of the 65 Feminine Footprints episodes. Part 1 includes twenty episodes from March 1978, Part 2 includes twenty episodes from April 1978, and Part 3 includes the remaining twenty-five episodes.

Abstract

Feminine Footprints was a 13-week radio series created by Carolyn Armenta Davis and aired by the Mutual Black Network to forty affiliated stations across the United States starting on March 6, 1978. It consisted of 65 one-minute vignettes dedicated to highlighting outstanding Black women’s achievements. The Feminine Footprints Collection includes content from the series, such as reel-to-reel tape recordings of the program and a script of the episodes. The collection also contains materials related to the show’s creation and reception, including research files, newspaper clippings, publicity, correspondence, and awards.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: Research Materials, Feminine Footprints Radio Program, and Audiovisual Media. Original order is maintained throughout the collection.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Feminine Footprints Collection was a gift of Carolyn Armenta Davis given on October 26, 2022 (Accession # SPEC 2022-14).
