Scope and Contents

Included in this series are documents pertaining to Michael Mason's service during World War I, his role as the Head of Surgery of the 12th General Hospital Unit during World War II, and his scholarly contributions following World War II.

The Army Operations sub-series consists of materials concerning the recruitment and training of the physicians, nurses and enlisted men assigned to the 12th General Hospital Unit, rosters, military-issued guidelines, assessments of the facilities at Ain-El-Turck, correspondence and memos, and documents relating to the daily operations of the surgical division of the 12th General Hospital.

The History of the Unit sub-series includes materials documenting the overall history of the 12th General Hospital Unit. The Patient Files sub-series includes doctors' notes, photographs, reports, x-rays, and negatives related to specific patients and their medical conditions and treatments. The Procedures sub-series includes documentation for various procedures for sanitation, operating room protocol, general surgery, and hospital wards.

The Publications sub-series includes medical journals, clippings, The Medi-Call, which was the 12th General Hospital's weekly newsletter, The Stars and Stripes, a daily newspaper for United States troops, and articles from the Northwestern Quarterly Bulletin that document the experiences of 12th General Hospital medical personnel in the immediate years following the war.

The Reports and Statistics sub-series consists of various official reports related to the activities of the 12th General Hospital Unit, including final summary reports. The Disaster Planning sub-series includes conference materials relating to medical plans for civic defense and disaster relief. Two of the folders deal with Mason's presentation, "Triage: Practical Considerations of a Large Catastrophe."

The Photographs and Ephemera sub-series includes photographs of activities of the 12th General Hospital Unit during the war taken in various locations, as well as miscellaneous postcards and slides from sites occupied during the war. The Artifacts sub-series contains all of the Mason collection's objects, including a flag, a painting, a bottle stopper, and a painted representation of the insignia of the 12th General Hospital Unit.
