Manual Rotation in the Management of Occiput Posterior and Transverse Positions, 1943

 Item — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

Warning: graphic childbirth content, including images of two possibly deceased infants.

Color, silent film details five different instances of childbirth in which obstetric intervention is required due to abnormal positioning of the baby in the birth canal. Occiput (back of head or skull) Right Posterior is the first segment, in which the baby is facing forward and to the right. In Occiput Left Posterior, the baby is facing forward and to the left. Next is an example of Occiput in Hollow of Sacrum, in which the baby is facing straight up to the mother’s pubic bone. In Occiput Right Transverse, the baby is sideways facing the mother’s left thigh. Finally, Occiput Left Transverse presents a baby who is sideways facing the mother’s right thigh. In each scenario, the baby must be manually rotated by the obstetrician and delivered with use of forceps. A medio-lateral episiotomy is performed in all five cases to ensure there is enough room for birth. Intertitles explain each procedure.
