Biographical / Historical

Wesley Hospital was first chartered as a Methodist hospital on October 26, 1888, commencing operations on December 25th of the same year. Its first temporary address was shared with the Chicago Training School for City Home and Foreign Missions at Dearborn Ave. and Ohio St. It moved to a rented building at 355 Ohio Street and began operations there on February 1, 1889, though the space quickly proved inadequate for long-term operations. William Deering and N.S. Davis played a role in advocating for a new location closer to the Northwestern Medical School, and in 1892 Deering purchased land at 25th and Dearborn Streets. An initial building was erected, which was followed by a larger building that was completed in 1901. The hospital was renamed to "Wesley Memorial Hospital" in 1914 following a $1 million gift from James Deering.
