Claude Barnett Research Collection
Consists of news clippings, photographs, and newsletters pertaining to African affairs during the 1950s and 1960s. The collection was assembled by Claude Barnett, director of the Associated Negro Press, a wire organization serving black American newspapers, and the World News Service, which provided similar service to African newspapers from 1960 until 1963.

Records of the Economic Survey of Liberia
This series contains the records generated by an economic survey of Liberia conducted by Northwestern University between January 1961 and August 1962 and initiated by the Government of Liberia through the International Cooperation Administration (ICA). The purpose of the survey was to "analyze the structure of the Liberian economy and measure its performance in order to suggest policies for development."

Images of Italians in Africa
This collection consists of images of the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea), during the occupation of that region by Italian forces (chiefly 1936-1938). Subjects depicted include camp life, military activities, roadbuilding, city views, celebrations, and native peoples.

Simon Ottenberg Papers
Simon Ottenberg is emeritus professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he was a faculty member from 1955-1991. He received his PhD from Northwestern University in 1957. His advisor was Melville J. Herskovits, founder of the Program of African Studies. He is a noted scholar of African art, particularly Nigerian art.
