Abstract The James Monroe Hughes Papers consist of five folders of materials, the major portion of which is correspondence. Biographical materials, copies of articles written by Hughes, and the report entitled “A Memorandum on the Education of Teachers at Northwestern University,”, which initiated the reorganization of teacher training at Northwestern, are also included.

Abstract McSwain's career at Northwestern was long and varied. He was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor in 1937, and to Professor in 1944. He served as Dean of Summer Session at Northwestern in 1946 and again in 1949. McSwain was appointed Dean of University College (Chicago Campus) in 1948 and held that position until he became Dean of the School of Education in 1951. Abstract The collection consists of three boxes of correspondence and printed material primarily relating to Melby's administration as Dean of Northwestern's School of Education between 1934 and 1941. It focuses on his professional activities as a leader in the Progressive Education Association and on the School's relationship to the University's central administration as well as its experimental pedagogical programs.
