Abstract

The McCormick Library has several collections that contain correspondence, diaries, and other materials related to the Civil War era. Some materials describe the experiences of soldiers during the war, or who served in the territories; others document the “home front” trials and anxieties, and some provide reflections or analysis after the war.

Abstract Charles Reeder Baker graduated from the Northwestern University Dental School in 1903. Scope and Contents This collection consists of photocopies and transcripts of letters from Joseph Medill to Abraham Lincoln, written between 1858 and 1865.The collection spans seven critical years in Lincoln's political career, from his unsuccessful campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1858, to the period following his re-election to the presidency in 1864 and before his assassination on April 14, 1865. Abstract

This series consists of an album and diary kept by Carrie M. Walkup, a student at Northwestern Female College in the 1860s, and a journal kept by her husband, A.V. Teeple. Her journals provide insight into student life and rules during the Amerivcan Civil War, the Copperhead convention, and the Presidential election of 1864.

Abstract

Rev. Willis Weaver was chaplain of the Illinois Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. He had a scholarly interest in Edwin M. Stanton, President Lincoln’s Secretary of War. This collection of material consists of typescripts of several of his articles on Stanton, as well as the published version of an address on Stanton given before the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, Commandery of Illinois, in Chicago in 1927.
