The John Richard Lindgren Foundation for the Promotion of International Peace and Christian Unity was established in April, 1909 by Northwestern Trustee John R. Lindgren, who donated $25,000 to the University, the income from which was to be devoted to sponsoring lectures, conferences, and essay contests on topics relating to international peace and Christian unity; and to such other purposes as the Foundation's Committee of Direction deemed appropriate. Funds from the Foundation have supported oratorical contests; scholarships and other financial aid for foreign students at Northwestern; and contributions to such organizations as the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches.
