Biography
Jean Summers Smith was born on April 14, 1911, in Walla Walla, Washington, the daughter of John Willam (U.S. Rep., 1919-33) and Jennie Burks Summers. After attending the University of Washington for one year she entered Northwestern University as a sophomore in 1929. A member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Smith graduated from Northwestern in 1932 with a B.A. degree in English. She married Donald Cameron Smith in 1937. Smith's mother, Jennie Burks Summers, attended Northwestern University as a member of the class of 1896; her sister, Hope Summers Witherell, took a bachelor of letters degree from the University in 1923.
