Biography

Vance N. Kirby earned his Bachelor of Arts at Dartmouth College in 1934 and went on to earn his LLB at Harvard in 1937. Kirby was admitted to the Bar in Massachusetts shortly thereafter. He practiced law at the firm of Scavell and Robert in Boston from 1937 to 1939, and was admitted to the bar in Connecticut where he practiced law in the firm of Anderson and St. John in Greenwich from 1939 to 1944.



Kirby entered government service in 1942 as attorney in the Office of Tax Legislative Counsel and was appointed Counsel in 1948 and served until 1957. He went on to practice law as a partner in Ross and O'Keefe in Chicago in 1957, the same year he joined the Northwestern University Law School faculty. He served as Professor until he was elected to emeritus status in 1980.



Kirby also served in the Illinois State Bar Association section on federal taxation and as Chairman of the Chicago Bar Association Committee on Federal Taxation. His writings include articles in the University of Illinois Law Review and the Northwestern University Law Review. With Professor Willard T. Pedrick he co-authored The Study of Federal Tax Law Volume I: Estate and Gift Taxes, Volume II: Income Tax on Individuals, and Volume III: Income Tax on Business Enterprises (1972-1976).
