Biography

Frank Hughes was born in Chicago on August 19, 1908. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1930 and shortly thereafter began his forty-year newspaper career with a three-year stint as a reporter for the Des Moines Register. In 1933 he left the Register and began a nine-year association with the Associated Press, first in Des Moines, where he eventually became editor for the Iowa Bureau, then for two years in the Chicago Bureau as a writer and photo editor. Hughes joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune as a rewrite man in 1942, beginning a 29-year career with the paper which ended with his retirement January 1, 1971. He died of a heart attack at age 63 on January 8, 1972 at Guadalajara, Mexico.
