Joseph T. McGivern was born in Hartford, Connecticut on April 13, 1952. After graduation from Edgewood High School in Madison, Wisconsin, he attended Northwestern University (1970 to 1976, with a gap for travel), and was awarded a Bachelor's degree by the School of Speech. He worked at various times for the Evanston parks System, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Kroch and Brentano's book store, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Spoleto music festival. McGivern died on February 12, 1986. Both he and his younger brother Frank are commemorated on the AIDS Memorial Quilt (panel 0597).
