Biography

Ronald Lucius Craig was born in 1952, and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He studied at Northwestern University, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1974, and his Juris Doctor at the School of Law in 1977. While an undergraduate he was a member of For Members Only (FMO) - Northwestern's Black student alliance, serving on its Executive Committee in 1971, and as Head of FMO's Admissions Committee in 1972. Ronald Craig was the first Black student on Northwestern's Undergraduate Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid. As a student he also worked as photographer for the FMO publication Pamoja People, the student newspaper Daily Northwestern, and the Syllabus yearbook. After receiving his Juris Doctor, he went on to teach law at New York University and Southern University (Baton Rouge, Louisiana). In 1982 he moved to Oslo, Norway, after marrying Norwegian criminologist Lill Scherdin. His American law degree was recognized by the Norwegian Ministry of Justice (Cand. Jur) in 1993. He earned his Dr. Juris degree (LLD) in Norway from the University of Oslo in 2006, with a doctoral thesis titled "Systemic Discrimination in Employment and the Promotion of Ethnic Equality." His work has since involved human rights law, telecommunications law, and contract law. He has served as senior advisor for the Equality and Antidiscrimination Ombudsman (a government office under Norway's Ministry of Culture) and worked with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights.
