Biography

Robert Avery (1944-) graduated from Northwestern University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government. From 1965 to 1967, while a student at Northwestern and Columbia University, Avery spent his summers as a bus driver for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). During that time, Avery was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local Union 241, A.F.L - C.I.O.

In 1977, Avery became a partner at Jones Day. In 2007, Avery and his wife founded Worldview Education and Care, a charity that supports education and health services for students in Northern Tanzania. Avery is still involved with Northwestern and is currently a member of the University Library’s Board of Governors.

Abstract The Robert Dean Avery Transportation Collection includes transportation related items from Avery including 464 postcards and materials from his time as a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus driver.
