East Africa, Circa 1900-1920

 File — Box: 15
Identifier: 15

Scope and Contents

The collection comprises one map of East Africa, 38 labeled views of Rhodesia and its people (including ‘Lobengula’s favorite wives’ and Cecil Rhodes), three views of the Victoria Falls and one view of Pungwe Waterfall near the Inyanga Mountains. The remaining slides are of Kenya, Nyasaland, Uganda, Mozambique, including a few scenes of missionary work and big game hunting. Two slides are labeled ‘Prime Minister of Justice Mgwanya’, ‘Catholic Princes Joseph and Augustus’. Slides 8, 11, 12, and 13, labeled Zimbabwe ruins, are of the Great Zimbabwe archaeological site.

The inside cover of the box has the handwritten label: "Lantern slides for Lancelot Edgell Dashwood from Graeuice (sp?)". Some of the slides are labeled with printed labels on the edge and many have handwritten labels on the glass themselves which repeat the printed labels. Handwritten dividers have been inserted to group the slides by topic, but some of these seem to have been misplaced over the years. The divider labeled "Zanzibar" grouped only three slides, two of which were clearly from Mombasa, so it is not referred to in the finding aid.
