Reise-Erinnerungen, Circa 1880-1900

 File — Album: 73
Identifier: 73

Scope and Contents

Photographs include scenes around Zanzibar, some with buildings flying the German flag in the background. All photographs are uncaptioned with the exception of a portrait of the Sultan and a few commercial photographs with captions printed on them. Also included is a studio portrait of the Zanzibari slave and ivory trader Tippu Tip, d. 1905 (spelled "Tipu Tib" in the caption provided in the inventory). Other photographs have been identified tentatively as Dar es Salaam, possibly Mombasa. Many photographs depict local people, including the Sultan's troops, and a few show European military officers, presumably German.

The original inventory identified various photographers, including Dias, Coutinho & others, but no indication of origination is apparent on the photographs. A few photographs have commercial stamps visible, but not legible, on the verso. All captions have been supplied from the inventory except as noted.
