Historic Notes

Images of the actual building of the railway commence on page 9 onward; on page 18 is a picture of Kimamba Station above which is one of a group of African women riding in an open wagon on what must have been one of the first trains over the stretch. On pages 20 & 21 are good photographs of trains which have crashed and derailed. Pages 24-28 have a number of shots of Africans preparing the ground for track-laying. At page 33, the images record recreational pursuits, chiefly hunting. On page 33, four Germans are shown posing at a table on which is placed a wind-up gramophone with an enormous horn. Propped in front of the table is the head of a Kudu. Half hidden by the gramophone horn is a seated African bibi. On page 34 a group of six Germans are posing with a turbaned Arab holding a gun in one hand and a chamber pot over the head of one of the Germans in the other. Below a dead giraffe on which the hunter is resting the butt of his rifle. On page 35, a group of bare-breasted African women are posing with their brand new iron buckets. Below is a heavily whiskered hunter reclining in his grass-roofed hut surrounded by his three dachshunds. Behind him the bamboo wall is covered with guns, spears, animal skins, mainly leopard, and heads, mainly Kudu. On page 36, two Africans are posing with a dead Kudu. Page 38 has two shots of Kikombo Station under construction. Page 40 & 47 provide further shots of a train crashes.
