Scope and Contents

This series contains 3 sub-series: "PhD and Fulbright field research"; "Post-PhD field research"; "Research projects". The first two sub-series contain fieldwork materials and field research that formed the basis of Larson's PhD dissertation, Making Ethnic Tradition in a Pre-Colonial Society: Culture, Gender, and Protest in the Early Merina Kingdom, 1750-1822" (1992), and of his first book, History and Memory in the Age of Enslavement: Becoming Merina in Highland Madagascar, 1770-1822 (2000). They include various materials that demonstrate Larson's methods and methodologies, such as handwritten notebooks, photographs, color video footages, and oral history audio tapes and transcriptions. They include his extensive photographs and videos since 1986 from his various travels to places such as Madagascar (Fort Dauphin, Berenty, Tana, Androy, Tshiombe, Antananarivo, Imerina, Ambohimanga and countryside, Majunga, Ilafy, Rova), Mauritius (Port Louis), Ghana, Togo, Benin, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Maropeng, Cape Town, Ethiopia (Adaw, Yeha, Debre Damo), Giant's Castle, Itala, Kruger Parks, Senegal (Dakar, Gorée, Saint-Louis), Morocco, Paris, and La Réunion. Sub-series "Research projects" contains a wide range of photocopied articles, bibliographies, tables of content, photographs of art, and illustrations with his research notes.

Conditions Governing Access

There are no restrictions on use of the materials in the department for research; all patrons must comply with federal copyright regulations. 76 born-digital files in this collection containing sensitive information have been embargoed until 2053.
