Abstract

The 16,000 ton twin-screw Lancastria was built by W. Beardmore and Co. of Glasgow, and launched on 31st May 1920, she operated on the North Atlantic until 1940 she was refitted for troop carrying. On 16th June 1940, while evacuating troops and refugees from St. Nazaire, she was attacked by German aircraft and sank within 20 minutes. An estimated 3,000 people died.
