Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Paul J. Culhane and H. Paul Friesema NEPA Precision Research Project Collection consists of five boxes of material generated between 1982 and 1987 as part of a research project to investigate the predictive accuracy of Environmental Impact Statements.

The collection consists of analytic data derived from dozens of Environmental Impact Statements, notes generated in the course of the study, reports published as a result of the study, and materials from activists and community members.

The project was funded by the National Science Foundation to Northwestern’s Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Research. The principal publication was Paul Culhane, H. Paul Friesema & Janice Beecher, Forecasts and Environmental Decisionmaking: The Content and Predictive Accuracy of Environmental Impact Statements. Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press, 1987.

Published Environmental Impact Statements used in the study were separated from the research material. Any not already held by the Transportation Library were added to the cataloged collection. Those which duplicated items already held in the Transportation Library were discarded.
