Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection documents the Program in Comparative Literary Studies (CLS) as well as its precursor, the Program of Comparative Literature and Theory (CLT). The records are arranged chronologically, beginning with the records of Comparative Literature and Theory. The bulk of the materials on the CLT program come from the Comparative Literature Council, a group of faculty from multiple Northwestern departments who together administrated the program and taught courses for it. The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences called for a special Ad Hoc Committee to be formed in 1990 to recommend changes to the CLT program, which resulted in the creation of the Program of Comparative Literary Studies.

The materials relating to the Program in Comparative Literary Studies document its courses, faculty, and policies. Included in this collection are the findings of a committee that updated the distribution requirement eligibility of CLS classes. The final section of materials in the collection are restricted administrative files.
