Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Allie Lowe Miles papers fill seven boxes including one half-sized box and three oversize ones. Biographical materials date between the years 1905 and 1956 and consist largely of items related to Miles’ schooling as well as to some of her personal possessions. In addition, there are newspaper and periodical clippings documenting events from Miles’ childhood through her professional career.

Correspondence spans the period 1894-1977, and consists chiefly of incoming letters relating to Miles’ radio work, along with a few fan letters.

Radio materials span the period from the 1930s through 1956 and consist largely of scripts for radio programs along with pertinent advertisements, some whole and some fragmentary, and promotional literature addressed to both fans and program sponsors. There are several artifacts associated with The Allie Lowe Miles Club, namely three buttons and a watch.

Miles’ writings date from 1927 to the 1950’s, and are divided into two subcategories. Unpublished writings, largely undated, include drafts of articles as well as of two books Miles intended to write. Published writings include clippings along with whole periodicals featuring Miles’ articles, five of her pamphlets, and two novels. Among the periodicals are several pulp romance magazines to which Miles contributed an advice column entitled "Your Love Affairs," in addition to the magazine, True Love Affairs, that Miles guest-edited.

Oversized Materials date between 1928 and 1936 and include some oversized clippings, a music score with lyrics by Miles’ colleague Sedley Brown, audio recordings, and a scrapbook. The audio recordings consist of transcription disks of the Valspar Vaudeville program along with a magnetic tape of Miles’ "Proverbs." The scrapbook affords an overview of Miles’ professional work; it includes photographs, fan letters, clippings, artwork, and ephemera from her various programs and interests.
