Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Charles C. Moskos Papers fill fifteen boxes and span the period 1950-2009, with a small amount of additional biographical material dating from before that period. The bulk of the collection dates between 1969 and 2007, and focuses on Moskos’ teaching, and his work on Greek-Americans. Papers are organized into six broad categories: biographical materials, correspondence, teaching files, research files, papers presented before professional organizations, and publications.

Biographical materials, including extensive newspaper clippings, fill three boxes.

General correspondence includes personal communications, letters and emails from and memorandums sent by Moskos to political and military leaders, and letters to and from leaders of the Greek Orthodox Church. Subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by topic, includes communication with military and government leaders and aides in regard to the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy, research trips to visit American troops who were actively seeing combat, and correspondence in regards to his research and research progress reports. Correspondence is organized chronologically within the folders.

Teaching files include the lectures and examinations from his popular Sociology 110 ("Introduction to Sociology") course as well as examinations and course reading materials from two other courses, Sociology 321 ("Armed Forces and Society") and Sociology 376 ("Sociology of Greek Americans"). All classes included here were taught at Northwestern between 1973 and 2007. There are lecture notes from an unidentified class included in this section.

Moskos’ research files and subject files consist of notes, data, papers, and some correspondence directly related to the subject matter. Grant-supported projects as well as projects pursued solely out of personal interest are included in this section, as well as a large section on Greek American research. (Note: material on the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy is found in Box 10.)

Papers, talks, and articles include copies of papers presented by Moskos at scholarly conferences and articles written by Moskos for a variety of general serial publications. These materials are arranged chronologically by presentation or publication date, and also include notes and correspondence directly related to the paper or article.

The publications include books that were published by Moskos, excerpts or sections of those books, and correspondence related to those titles. They are filed in chronological order by date of publication and range from 1970-2004.
