Publications: Mentions and Dedications to Clyde L. Grose, 1941, 1983

The Clyde LeClare Grose Papers fill two boxes and consist of biographical information on Grose and his wife, correspondence, research, publications, and a bound copy of his dissertation. The material spans the years from 1987, with majority of the contents concentrated in the 1920s and 1930s.

Biographical materials include individual biographical sketches of Clyde and Carolyn Grose, written by their daughter Virginia. The sketch of Clyde Grose includes examples of his stories and poetry, as well as the prayer recited at his funeral in 1942. Additional biographical materials relating to Clyde Grose are press clippings, obituaries, and a genealogical outline of his ancestors. The materials pertaining to Carolyn Grose are transcripts, grade reports, and alumni information sheets related to her time at Northwestern University.

Correspondence includes two folders of general correspondence of Clyde Grose and Carolyn Trowbridge Grose, respectively. Clyde Grose's general correspondence span the years 1923 to 1987, arranged chronologically, and is primarily related to his work as a professor and later Department Chair. The folder includes letters written after his death by colleagues and publishers concerning the second edition of the Select Bibliography and the posthumous publication of Englishmen Abroad. Carolyn Grose's general correspondence file contains documents dating from 1918 to 1971, most of it relating to her relationship with Northwestern University. The remaining correspondence files, dating between 1920 and 1940, relate to Grose's work on the Selected Bibliography. Organized alphabetically by correspondent's surname, these letters document Grose's progress on the bibliography, as he sought criticism and suggestions from noted historians in this country and England.

The research file documents the awarding of a grant from the University towards Grose's work on his Selected Bibliography.

Publication materials are divided into three categories: publications and reprints of Grose's scholarly work, reviews of his Selected Bibliography, and dedications and mentions of him in other published works. The folder of published work dates from 1967. While the majority of the publications relate to Grose's specialty in seventeenth and eighteenth British history, his earliest publication was Northwestern University in the World War. Three reviews of Grose's bibliography date from 1940, soon after the book's initial publication. The final folder contains mentions and dedications of Dr. Grose in published works by others.

The conference file contains the program of the Conference of Representatives of University Social Science Research Organizations in 1937 at which Grose presided over a meeting entitled "Criteria and Objectives of Research in Social Science."

The final document is a bound volume of Grose's PhD dissertation, "A Study in Restoration Anglo-French Relations Chiefly during the Years from 1674-1677."
