Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Hugh M. Hulburt Papers fill nineteen and one-half boxes and are arranged in nine subseries: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, teaching files, administrative files, research and consulting files, professional organizations files, speeches, and publications.

The biographical materials include personnel security questionnaires, curricula vitae, a partial bibliography, and various activity and travel records.

The education files all relate to Hulbert's graduate work at the University at Wisconsin and include lecture notes, reading notes, and research materials. These files are arranged alphabetically according to topical headings.

General correspondence deals with Hulburt's teaching, consulting, writing, and speaking and is arranged chronologically. Subject correspondence, arranged topically, includes letters between Hulbert and several individuals; recommendations; and material pertaining to Hulburt's work on a committee investigating a protest lodged by a Northwestern doctoral candidate, Richard G. Rawlins.

The teaching files contain syllabi, schedules, examinations, grade records, student papers, and correspondence. While one folder relates to a course Hulburt taught at Catholic University, the rest of the files pertain to Northwestern courses and are arranged sequentially by course number.

The administrative files consist of materials pertaining to Hulburt's service on several Northwestern University and Technological Institute committees. The files are topically arranged.

Research and consulting files relate primarily to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers with which Hulburt was active for over a decade. These files are organized alphabetically by topical headings.

The speeches, arranged in folders alphabetically by title or topic, consist mostly of technical presentations delivered before scientific colleagues. When a speech was later published, pertinent material has been filed with the publication.

Publications comprise about one quarter of the collection and are arranged alphabetically by title. The publications files include notes, handwritten and typed drafts, reprints, and related correspondence.
