Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Harold B. Gotaas papers fill twenty-four and one-half boxes and are arranged in seven subseries: Gotaas' graduate education files, correspondence, teaching files, research and consulting files, files on professional organization, speeches and papers, and publications.

Also included in the Gotaas papers is one box of biographical materials which include vitae, completed biographical forms for various reference publications, clippings from newspapers and magazines, and news releases. Here also may be found material relating to several of Gotaas' awards.

The graduate education files include lecture and reading notes, syllabi, and problem sheets from Gotaas' graduate study at Harvard.

The correspondence, which consists of general correspondence arranged by date and subject correspondence arranged alphabetically by folder title, deals with various educational, engineering, and personal matters, as well as meetings, projects, and trips. Also included are Gotaas' letters of recommendation for colleagues and students. Users who consult the subject correspondence folders should also examine the general correspondence folders for related documentation.

The teaching files, occupying eight boxes, include course syllabi and schedules, lecture and reading notes, student papers, grade records, and related materials pertaining to Gotaas' teaching. The files are arranged first according to Gotaas' academic affiliation and then by course number, title, or topic. Two boxes contain correspondence, proposals, outlines, drafts of theses, and other records concerning Gotaas' graduate students; these are arranged alphabetically by students' surnames.

The research and consulting files deal with Gotaas' local, regional, national, and international consulting work, primarily on sanitation and pollution problems. These files include correspondence, drafts of reports, and pertinent data collected during consul tancies. The files are arranged alphabetically by topical headings.

The files relating to professional organizations include correspondence, minutes, and reports pertaining to several committees Gotaas chaired and projects with which he was involved, particularly on behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Academy of Engineers, and other groups.

The materials in the speeches and papers files document one of Gotaas' major activities: he was much in demand as a speaker. These files, however, provide only a partial record of his speaking engagements; if a speech or paper was published the material associated with it is filed in the publications subseries.

The publications files contain drafts, notes, correspondence, and reprints. Gotaas wrote three book-length works: his report on composting of organic wastes for the World Health Organization, a report on research into stabilization pond algae, and a laboratory manual for research on algae symbiosis. Most of Gotaas' articles report the results of his research; however several deal with engineering education. Also included in this subseries are a few review articles by Gotaas. Gotaas' major publications are arranged alphabetically by title; following are briefer works including articles and reviews, also arranged alphabetically according to title. Article reprints close out the series.
