Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Boxes 1-78 (issues 1-70): The editorial records from issues 1 through 70 of TriQuarterly are arranged in seventy-eight boxes and date from the period ca. 1964-1987. They include correspondence between authors, artists, or their representatives and TriQuarterly editors and employees; authors' manuscripts in typescript, photocopy, or proof formats; and, where pertinent, materials relating to manuscript translations.

The records are arranged sequentially by TriQuarterly issue number. Folders pertaining to each issue number are arranged alphabetically by the surname of each contributing author, or by subject title. One or more folders of general editorial notes, correspondence, or related materials typically complete the files pertaining to each issue. The volume of records relating to any given issue range from one or two folders to more than a box. There are no records here from issues 32 and 63.

Boxes 67 through 76 contain a run of alphabetically arranged author and subject files. These include correspondence or manuscripts not identified with specific TriQuarterly issues and solicitations or rejections of manuscript submissions.

Box 77 includes essay drafts and other materials relating to TriQuarterly's Series on Criticism and Culture, No. 1, Criticism in the University (Northwestern University Press, 1985).

Newspaper, magazine, and journal articles concerning TriQuarterly or its contributors may be found in Box 78. These are foldered and arranged according to issue number. Clippings not associated with any specific issue follow. Completing the series are a few folders of press releases, general correspondence, and award certificates.

Boxes 79-113 (issues 69, 71, 73-82, 85, 90-99): This addition to the editorial records of TriQuarterly fills 35 boxes and includes records related to specific issues of the journal (boxes 79-88) as well as author and subject files (boxes 89-113), with the bulk of the addition comprising author and subject files.

Issue-specific records fill nine and a half archival boxes and contain material related to issues 69, 71, 73-82, 85, and 90-99. They include correspondence between authors and editors, contracts, some edited proofs, and a few unedited submissions. Materials pertaining to two special issues, Issue 69 (“From South Africa”) and Issue 85 (“New Writing from Mexico”), constitute the bulk of the records, filling about six boxes. Material from several other issues takes up only a folder or two.

The records are organized sequentially by TriQuarterly issue number, folders pertaining to each issue are arranged alphabetically by author's surname or topical title.

Author and subject files, arranged alphabetically by author surname or topical title, fill 25 boxes. These files remain in their original folders in order to retain editorial notations (including issue number in which the author's work appeared).

Boxes 114-115 (graphic and oversize materials): TriQuarterly posters and oversize graphic art materials produced by or for publication in TriQuarterly form this addition to the series. Materials are housed in two dropfront boxes. Folder 1 contains larger sized posters and is stored in a map case.
