The Philip Brickman Papers consist of research papers, essays, stories, and other work produced during elementary and high school, 1949-1960; undergraduate materials, 1960-1964; graduate school materials 1965-1968; and a small amount of correspondence and publications from his tenure at Northwestern University, 1970-1978.

The first subseries consists of Brickman's elementary and high school work. These items provide a unique insight into the young intellectual curiosity and development of a future productive scholar. Fiction stories based on the Sherlock Holmes character, science papers, poems, and other English papers are included.

Brickman's studies at Harvard University are documented by letters written to his parents and sister and by course materials. The latter includes research papers, his bachelor's thesis, commencement materials, and a transcript. Brickman's application for admission to the University of Michigan Graduate School is included with the transcript.

Brickman's studies at the University of Michigan, are reflected by similar materials: correspondence to family and course materials. Virtually all the letters are written to his parents. The course materials include syllabi and other items pertaining to Brickman's own teaching activities, research papers, and a copy of his doctoral dissertation. The dissertation is entitled, “Expectancy Disconfirmation and Information Search: Cognitive and Affective Components.”

Addition, Boxes 5-7 The addition to the Philip Brickman Papers fills two and one-half boxes with material dating from 1960-1982. Also included in the addition are Commencement Programs, News Clippings, reports from the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, various published works, and a manuscript of his book Commitment and Exchange
