"Belief in the Bill of Rights", From 1956

The Raymond W. Mack papers fill two and one-half boxes and span the years from 1951 through 1995. The papers focus primarily on Mack's work as a sociologist, with some biographical material included.

The papers are separated into three distinct categories: biographical materials, correspondence and publications. The biographical materials include newspaper clippings, brief biographical profiles from various points in Mack's career, and press releases that relate largely to his work as an academic.

The collection contains a small amount of correspondence with representatives of professional organizations, primarily regarding book reviews or articles that Mack contributed to their publications. Notable here is material relating to the two articles Mack wrote for the Encyclopedia Britannica on race relations in the United States in 1967 and 1968. There is also a small file of correspondence on the subject of student unrest and protest in the late 1960s. The material in this folder relates largely to the 1969 occupation of a University of Minnesota building by African-American students.

Publications form the largest section of the papers. Included here are correspondence, drafts and research materials pertaining to four books that Mack wrote or to which he contributed. This section includes a number of Mack's articles relating to a range of sociological topics but largely concerning race relations in the 1960s and 1970s, and book reviews that Mack published. Generally, only the published text of the article or review is present.
