Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Records of the Medical Specialty Training Program fill 1.5 Archival Boxes, spanning the years 1936-1951. The bulk of the records comes from the life of the program (1944-1950); other records provide context for the collection.

These records consist of documents relating to the administration of the Medical Specialty Training Program. They include correspondence to and from program administrators, faculty and affiliated hospitals, some financial records generated by the program, minutes from committee meetings relating to the program and records of doctors enrolled in the program. Correspondence with the directors of medical specialty boards (including descriptive brochures sent by the various boards) reflects the purpose for establishing the program, as well as guidance for program design. The dissolution of the program is also documented.

The series contains records specific to specialties and courses taught by the program. These include outlines and schedules for particular courses, correspondence about faculty and students in the specialties, and other administrative records for specific programs. Of particular interest are lecture notes from the Basic Sciences Survey Course for Residents in Internal Medicine, lectures 1-24, spring 1948.
