Zoology, 1943 - 1946
Scope and Contents
These records comprise the administrative files of Addison Hibbard, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, largely spanning the period 1943-1946; they also include a small amount of material from the period 1935-1942. Addison Hibbard served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 1930-1945 after holding the same position at the University of North Carolina. Toward the end of Hibbard's tenure as Dean, he was taken ill and his administrative responsibilities were assumed during parts of 1943 and until June 30, 1944 by G. Donald Hudson, Professor of Geography. Beginning July, 1944, these duties were undertaken by J. W. Buchanan, Professor of Zoology.
Hibbard died on May 17, 1945, and the Deanship was vacant until September 1, 1946 when Simeon E. Leland was appointed Dean. A substantial portion of the records, therefore, document the administration of the College under the administrative assistants Hudson and Buchanan rather than Hibbard.
The records reflect the routine administrative functions of the Dean's office as well as long-range departmental and College planning. The records include correspondence, memoranda, recommendations, surveys, budgets, reports and course descriptions. They concern College faculty and staff; appointments and promotions; College and departmental budgets and planning; committees; students; and World War II related activities.
