The Jonathan R. T. Hughes Papers fill three boxes and span the period 1949-1992. The papers are organized in eight main categories: biographical materials, education files, correspondence (both general and subject), teaching files, research files, speeches/papers, publications and computer disks.

The biographical materials include curricula vitae, clippings, obituaries, certificates, membership lists of organizations to which Hughes belonged, programs of events at which he spoke, articles honoring him and interviews with him. Also included are a picture drawn by one of his children and a poem written by his wife, Mary Gray Hughes.

The education files are arranged in two sections. One is comprised of notes, reading lists and review questions for classes Hughes attended or taught while at the University of Washington. These records are arranged by course number and chronologically by date within each folder. The second section includes research notes and his Doctor of Philosophy thesis: "A Study of the British Economy in the Crisis of 1857."

The correspondence is arranged in two sections. The first, general correspondence, spanning the period 1955-1992, is arranged chronologically by date, and includes correspondence relating to academic and business matters, as well as personal correspondence.

The second section, subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically by date within each folder, consists largely of correspondence with publishers and colleagues. Some relates to research proposals he developed.

The teaching files are divided according to universities where Hughes taught. The first section, relating to Hughes' classes at Northwestern, is organized respectively by individual courses and by subject. The course files, arranged by course number, are chiefly comprised of course lecture notes, but also include examinations, syllabi and student papers. Subject files relating to Northwestern are arranged alphabetically by subject and include bibliographies, schedules, proposed courses, and general notes.

The remaining teaching files are arranged according to other universities where Hughes taught, and by course number thereunder. Typically included are reading lists, syllabi and course notes.

The research files are arranged alphabetically by subject and within each folder chronologically by date when possible. Included in the research files are, among other materials, office correspondence and research memorandum relating to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, research notes, bibliographies and correspondence concerning Japanese-American internment during World War II and research notes relating to various economic topics. The material relating to Japanese-American internment is especially significant.

Speeches and papers are arranged alphabetically by title of the speech or paper that Hughes wrote or gave. Occasionally included are notes and annotated versions.

The publications are divided into three sections. The first, articles, is arranged alphabetically by title of published article. Some folders also include research notes and annotated drafts.

The second section, books, is arranged alphabetically by title and includes significantly annotated chapters of Hughes' books. Some folders also contain research notes, tables, graphs, diagrams, related correspondence and reviews. Also included is a revised draft of an unpublished book, "Framework of the American Economy," written by Hughes in 1972 or 1973 under contract to S.R.A. Publishing, and revised in 1975-1976.

The third section, book reviews, is organized chronologically by date of review.

The final category, computer disks, filed in two folders, includes disks of chapters of Hughes' books, American Economic History, and The Governmental Habit, as well as several backup disks, travel disks and indexes.
