Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This addition to the papers of Jonathan Hughes consists of correspondence with Gerald Painter, and copies of articles and essays that Hughes sent to Painter over the course of thirty years. The letters, dating between 1982 and 1990, document the later years of a friendship that began when both men were in the second grade. The friendship is summarized in the letter Painter sent to the University Archives along with the correspondence and articles. Most of the correspondence is from Hughes to Painter, although Painter kept photocopies of a few of his letters to Hughes. The correspondence includes a photocopy of a letter from Hughes to Painter's mother on the death of her husband in 1960.

Copies of essays, speeches, and articles are mostly typescript or photocopied versions of writings that are included in the original collection of the Papers (see boxes 13-16; the original box and folder location for duplicate items has been noted at the top of the copy in the addition). Some of the copies in the addition include handwritten notations from Hughes to Painter. Occasional Post-It notes that Painter used to explain certain items have been removed and replaced by photocopies of the notes. Two items in the addition were not included in the original collection: a typed “occasional essay” entitled “The Camp at Minidoka,” about a US internment camp for Japanese Americans (circa 1992; folder 3), and an article or essay entitled “Writing the Vital Few,” about his 1966 book The Vital Few (circa 1986; folder 4).
