Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The records of the Intercollegiate Chess League of America (ICLA) are administrative in nature, and consist of correspondence, the ICLA Bulletins, tournament crosstables, tournament host bids, chess club polls, ICLA Annual Business Meeting reports, ballots and proxies, tournament programs, publicity and financial records.

Most of the correspondence relates to administrative activities, the organizing of clubs and events, and solidifying affiliation. Between 1978 and 1984, ICLA files contain membership, organizational, Pan-Am championship and other game materials arranged in chronological order.

It is worth noting that the ongoing challenge of the organization was continuity; when leaders of vital campus clubs graduated, often the result was the local club foundering. Thus the officers of the ICLA were mostly non-students.

Harold J. Winston, former ICLA president (1972) became official ICLA historian in 1970. Others mentioned in the series are John Reinsberg ICLA Bulletin director 1972 and Joe Sprince treasurer 1972. Peter Meschter was ICLA president in 1971 and former executive director. Other important ICLA figures include Randolph Pacetti and Robert Blaine, membership directors in 1972 and 1973 respectively, Donald Byrne and Seth Hawkins ICLA treasurers in 1967 and 1971, ICLA Guide editor Stephan Dann, and Alan Straub, who was president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Chess League (Met-ICL), New York City. Major Edward B. Edwardson, Jr. was president of the United States Chess Federation.
