Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The audiocassettes in this collection have been digitized and can be accessed at dc.library.northwestern.edu.

The Asher Golden Collection contains 29 audiocassettes and a small amount of paper documents relating to his coverage of Northwestern football during the 1995-1996 and 1996-1997 seasons, including their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1949 and their first Big 10 title in 60 years. Of special interest are the tapes recording WNUR’s live coverage of Northwestern football, as well as the station’s special sports programming leading up to the 1997 Citrus Bowl, a game that matched Northwestern and the University of Tennessee team led by Peyton Manning.

The October 21, 1995 game against Wisconsin (resulting in a 35-0 NU victory) is located on tapes 8A-8C. Facing Wake Forest on September 7, 1996, the Wildcats walked away with a 27-28 defeat, documented in tapes 4A-4D. Tapes 7A-7B report the next week’s game against Duke on September 14, 1996, where the Wildcats won 38-13 over the Blue Devils. On October 5, 1996, Northwestern faced Michigan, winning 17-16 (tapes 5A-5C). Later that month on October 26, 1996, they defeated Illinois in a 27-24, documented in tapes 6A-6C. Near the end of the season, Northwestern won vs. Purdue on November 16, 1996 with a final score of 27-24 (tapes 10A-10D). The remainder of the collection documents NU’s bowl time coverage, including three special sports programs recorded by WNUR that preview Northwestern’s upcoming Citrus Bowl game against Tennessee. The January 1, 1997 Citrus Bowl is covered on tapes 3A-3E, where Tennessee beat the Wildcats in a 28-48 final score.

As Golden’s assignments varied for the games featured in this collection, his is often one of many voices heard on the tapes. More specific information on the other announcers, crew, hosts, and guests involved can be found with the digitized files, accessible at media.northwestern.edu.

The audiocassettes are approximately 90 minutes in duration (45 minutes per side), although the actual running time of the recordings varies.
